Forest Lake Student Study New York’s Roots

Fourth graders at Forest Lake Elementary School recently explored Native American culture as part of their social studies unit on the first people of New York.

Students visited a touch table with both authentic and replica items, including a turtle rattle from the Shinnecock Nation. Parents volunteered to help students with projects including letter writing on a parchment that represented animal hide, and making corn husk dolls, clay pots, talking sticks and Wampum strings. They also played games that were created by Native Americans.
