Forest Lake Students First to Experience New Wantagh Fire Safety House

Each October, the Wantagh Fire Department visits Forest Lake during Fire Prevention Week as an opportunity to teach children how to prevent fires and what to do in case of an emergency. Fire Prevention Week is traditionally observed during the week that includes Oct. 9, the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire which burned about 3.5 square miles of the city in 1871.
Forest Lake students not only learned about keeping their rooms and basements free of clutter, but also about kitchen safety and how curtains can fuel fire. They also learned that while candles are beautiful, they should never let them burn down completely, and to always extinguish them when not in use.
Following the presentation, the 4th and 5th grade students were the first class ever to test out the brand new Wantagh Fire Department’s Fire Safety House where they learned what steps to take in case of a fire. The larger house now allows two groups of students in separate rooms at the same time, whereas previously only one group could enter one room at one time.
Once students heard the smoke detector, they dropped to the ground, crawled to the door to test its warmth, crawled to the window, opened it, yelled “Help!” and jumped safely out of the window.
Fire Prevention Week focuses on practical, age-appropriate safety messages, including creating a home escape plan, practicing fire drills, testing smoke alarms and knowing how to safely respond if a fire occurs. For elementary students, the week provides a fun and engaging way to learn that fire safety is an important responsibility for everyone.
